Find a pergola builder in Adelaide

A pergola turns a bare patio or backyard into somewhere you’ll actually use, with shade in summer and shelter for barbecues and get-togethers. Tell us what you have in mind and we’ll connect you with a local carpenter who builds pergolas and outdoor entertaining areas.

Carpenter Adelaide is a free referral service. We don’t build pergolas ourselves: the carpenter quotes, contracts and does the work, and you deal with them directly.

Choosing a pergola for your home

Attached or freestanding

An attached pergola connects to your house, so you can step straight out under cover. The connection to your roof, fascia and gutters needs to be designed and built properly to avoid leaks. A freestanding pergola stands on its own posts, so it can go anywhere on the block, as long as it meets the setback rules for your zone.

Roof style

A flat or skillion roof is the simplest and usually the most affordable. A gable roof adds height and a sense of space, and can be matched to the pitch of your house roof. Open rafters give dappled shade; polycarbonate or Colorbond gives full rain protection.

Materials

Timber suits traditional homes and gardens and can be stained to match a deck. Steel posts and beams are slimmer and need less maintenance. Our guide to choosing a pergola covers styles and materials in more detail, and pergola vs verandah explains the difference between the two.

What to ask before you sign

  • Is it attached or freestanding, and how will it connect to the house?
  • What size posts and beams, and what timber or steel?
  • What roofing is included, and does it come with gutters and downpipes?
  • Does it need development approval, and who will lodge it through PlanSA?
  • Are footings, concrete, painting or staining included?
  • If you’d like lighting, fans or heaters, who will do the electrical work? (It must be a licensed electrician.)
How it works

A quote from a local carpenter, without ringing around

  1. Tell us about your project

Fill in the short form with your suburb and what you need: a new deck, a pergola, a feature wall, framing for an extension or a repair.

  2. We refer a local carpenter

We pass your enquiry to a recommended carpenter who does that kind of work in your part of Adelaide. Every carpenter we refer holds a current South Australian building work contractor licence and public liability insurance.

  3. The carpenter contacts you

They get in touch to talk through the job, arrange a site visit if it’s needed and give you a quote.

  4. You decide

There’s no obligation. Compare the quote, check the carpenter’s licence and only go ahead if you’re happy with the price, design and timing.

How to choose a carpenter in Adelaide

Choose a carpenter who holds a current South Australian building work contractor licence and public liability insurance, gives you a written, itemised quote, and tells you who will lodge any council approval.

Every carpenter we refer meets our criteria (a current South Australian building work contractor licence and public liability insurance) when we add them to our list, but it’s still worth checking for yourself. The statutory warranties under the Building Work Contractors Act 1995 (SA) come from the carpenter who does the work, not from us.

Checks before you sign

  1. Check the carpenter’s building work contractor licence on the Consumer and Business Services (CBS) website.
  2. Ask for a current certificate of currency for their public liability insurance.
  3. Get a written quote listing the materials, sizes, inclusions, exclusions and GST.
  4. For decks, pergolas and structural work, ask whether you need development approval and who will lodge it through PlanSA.
  5. Ask whether site preparation, engineering, rubbish removal and making good are included.
  6. For domestic building work of $20,000 or more that needs development approval, the builder must take out building indemnity insurance and give you the certificate before work starts.

Pergolas & Outdoor Entertaining: common questions

What’s the difference between a pergola and a verandah?

A pergola is traditionally an open-roofed frame of beams and rafters, sometimes covered with shade cloth, slats or polycarbonate. A verandah usually has a solid roof and is attached to the house. Our guide to the difference between a pergola and a verandah explains more.

Timber or steel: which is better for a pergola?

Timber has a warm, natural look and suits character homes and gardens, but it needs regular sealing or painting. Steel is strong, slim and needs less upkeep. Many pergolas mix the two. Your carpenter can quote both.

Do I need council approval for a pergola?

Many pergolas need development approval in South Australia, depending on their size, height, roofing and position on your block. Some small, unroofed pergolas may be exempt. Applications are lodged through PlanSA, so ask your carpenter who will lodge yours, or check with your council.

What roof options are there?

Common options are open rafters, slatted or louvred roofs, polycarbonate sheeting, Colorbond and insulated panels. Roof shapes include flat, skillion (sloped), gable and hip. The right choice depends on how much shade and rain protection you want and how it ties in with your house.

Can a pergola include seating, screens or a fire pit area?

Yes. Many outdoor areas combine a pergola with built-in bench seating, privacy screens, planter boxes or a paved fire-pit zone. Mention everything you’d like in your enquiry so the carpenter can quote it together. Anything involving gas or electrics needs a licensed gasfitter or electrician.
