Projects we can help with

  • Timber feature walls
  • VJ panelling (also called shiplap or groove panelling)
  • Wainscoting
  • Timber ceiling linings, inside and outdoors
  • Pergola and alfresco ceilings
  • Fibre cement and composite wall cladding
  • Decorative arches and divider walls

VJ panelling

VJ panelling is one of the most popular wall finishes in Australian homes. It suits coastal, country, vintage and Scandinavian styles and can be run full height, half height or on a ceiling. Read more in our guide: what is VJ panelling?

Wainscoting

Wainscoting adds panelling to the lower part of the wall, usually with a capping rail. It can look classic or modern depending on the profile and paint colour. See what is wainscoting?

Timber ceilings

Timber ceiling linings add warmth to living areas and are a popular finish under pergolas and alfresco roofs, where they make the space feel like an outdoor room.

Cement cladding

Fibre cement cladding is a practical, low-maintenance finish for the outside of homes, extensions and granny flats. It comes in many profiles, from traditional weatherboard to large smooth panels, and is usually painted.

What to ask before you sign

  • What product, profile and thickness will be used?
  • How will it be fixed, and does the wall need battens or extra framing first?
  • Is painting or finishing included, or will you need a painter?
  • For external cladding: how will it be weatherproofed around windows, doors and corners?
  • For wet areas or near the boundary: are there extra requirements?

How to choose a carpenter in Adelaide

Choose a carpenter who holds a current South Australian building work contractor licence and public liability insurance, gives you a written, itemised quote, and tells you who will lodge any council approval.

Every carpenter we refer meets our criteria (a current South Australian building work contractor licence and public liability insurance) when we add them to our list, but it’s still worth checking for yourself. The statutory warranties under the Building Work Contractors Act 1995 (SA) come from the carpenter who does the work, not from us.

Checks before you sign

  1. Check the carpenter’s building work contractor licence on the Consumer and Business Services (CBS) website.
  2. Ask for a current certificate of currency for their public liability insurance.
  3. Get a written quote listing the materials, sizes, inclusions, exclusions and GST.
  4. For decks, pergolas and structural work, ask whether you need development approval and who will lodge it through PlanSA.
  5. Ask whether site preparation, engineering, rubbish removal and making good are included.
  6. For domestic building work of $20,000 or more that needs development approval, the builder must take out building indemnity insurance and give you the certificate before work starts.

Feature Walls & Cement Cladding: common questions

What is VJ panelling?

VJ panelling is made of long boards with a V-shaped groove where they join, which gives a classic vertical-line look. It’s popular in coastal, Hamptons, country and Scandinavian-style rooms, and can run floor to ceiling or half-way up the wall. Our VJ panelling guide explains the options.

What is wainscoting?

Wainscoting is panelling on the lower part of a wall, usually topped with a rail. It was originally used to protect walls, but today it’s mostly decorative. Our wainscoting guide covers the main styles.

What is cement cladding used for?

Fibre cement cladding is used on the outside of homes and extensions, and for feature walls. It comes in boards and panels, including weatherboard, shiplap and smooth or textured sheet looks, and is usually painted. It’s durable and doesn’t rot, which is why it’s so common on new builds and renovations.

Can I see samples before I decide?

Yes. Ask the carpenter to bring samples or point you to a supplier showroom so you can see the profiles and finishes in person before you commit.

Do feature walls add value to a home?

A well-finished feature wall or a fresh exterior can make a home more appealing to buyers, but how much value it adds depends on the home and the market. It’s best treated as an improvement you’ll enjoy, rather than a guaranteed return.
